World Series Preview Extravaganza!

March 11, 2009 at 09:45PM View BBCode

First of all, congrats to both the Rudeboys and the Indians on their terrific seasons. Now on to the preview:

It?s fitting that the World Series for our league features not only the two most talented teams (in my opinion) but also the two hottest teams playing right now. It should be an extremely tight and competitive battle and I would be very surprised if it did not go 6 or 7 games.

Breakdowns

Offense
Detroit was third in the majors in runs scored (879) while Cincy was 4th (850). These two teams have identical on-base-percentages (.356, tied for first in the majors) and Cincy has just a 0.001 higher slugging percentage (major league leading .463 to Detroit?s second best .462). Cincy features sluggers [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=5577880]Darrell Kelly[/url] (NL MVP winner) and [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=5577587]Bill Borowski [/url](NL MVP runner-up) while Detroit is paced by all-stars [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=5577480]Jorge Smithberg[/url] and [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=5577314]Thomas Milliken[/url]. A major X-Factor could be the speed of the Cincy baserunners against the Detroit catchers who both have C+ arms. Against Milwaukee catcher [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=5577478]Pat Katoll[/url] who also has a C+ arm Cincy was 10/12 stealing bases in the ALCS.

Advantage ? Even

Starting Pitching
Cincy pitchers led the majors with a 3.70 ERA and also had a major league leading 1.26 WHIP. Detroit put up a pedestrian 4.28 ERA and 1.36 WHIP. Still, Detroit has two stud pitchers in [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=5577512]Jimmy Amole[/url] and [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=5577323]Lee Schulz[/url] who can shut down any lineup on any given night. By winning their LCS in 6 games Cincy will be able to throw out their three aces ([url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=5577761]Bob Sarmiento[/url], [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=5577390] Paul Barrett[/url], and [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=5577438]Alfredo Waugh[/url]) two times each while only having to pitch veteran [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=5577951]Mike Alou[/url] once.

Advantage ? Cincinnati

Bullpen
Both teams have a solid back end to the bullpen (Cincy with [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=5577437]Cy Gonzales[/url] and Detroit with AL Fireman award winner [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=5577616]Babe Ness[/url]) but Detroit is much better in middle and long relief. Tigers relievers [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=5577517]Felix Andersen[/url] and [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=5577584]Denny Blackwell[/url] have been great this year. Meanwhile, Cincy middle reliever [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=5577606]Jack Stovall[/url] has struggled mightily for the meh this league sucks as has long reliever [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=5577945]Rip Reynolds[/url]. In a tight series this could end up making all the difference.

Advantage ? Detroit

Defense
Good glove work was not a forte for either of these two teams but Cincy holds a decided edge. Among current players on the two rosters, Cincy has a +/- of +15 while Detroit has a +/- of -42. Furthermore, Cincy has strong defensive players at the key positions of catcher, shortstop, and centerfield ([url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=5577318]Junior Murvin[/url], [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=5577515]Warren Houtteman[/url], and [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=5577309]Cowboy Marzano[/url] respectively) while Detroit leaves much to be desired at these positions. When two evenly matched teams such as these play, defense can sometimes tilt the favor towards one side or the other.

Advantage ? Cincinnati

Intangibles
Both of these teams have been playing their best ball in the past month and a half. Cincy is 26-10 in September and October while Detroit is 24-11 in September and October (playoffs included). Both managers are very competent and shook off a disappointing start to the season to climb back into the playoff race. Although Cincy has home field advantage there is not much separating these two teams intangibles-wise.

Advantage ? Even

Bold Prediction: My head says Cincy but my heart says Motown ? Detroit in 7

This has gotta break the record for the most amount of posts ever in a free-league season...and i've been in leagues where not even a single post was made for the entire 2 months.

Baseball America should really hire this guy to do some writing :P

P.S. - In all seriousness, I'll be missing this (albeit, at times dysfunctional) league once it's finally over.

Agreed. This has been the strangest Single Season League I've ever been involved in. Definitely kept things interesting!

I'm thinking Cincy is giving my Detroit squad way too much credit. I'm not even sure how my guys made it this far.

Cincinnati in five (hopefully we can keep from getting swept!).
