Player Cards

I'm tinkering with the top of the player cards; if you notice any browser weirdness or SQL errors, please let me know.

I am noticing some interesting looking faces and hats on my player cards.

Will you be trying to match faces to names so they have some degree of ethnic realism?

Nope. There are over 2100 faces (so far) and they are assigned randomly. But when it's complete there will be a way to select a new face (you'll get a page with a dozen random faces to pich from rather than browsing the whole set) or to remove the picture (in which case it will say No Picture Available). You will also be able to disable the pics completetly, in which case you woud (probably) see a team logo instead.

I ran a script to make sure players with narrow heads would fit their caps, but if you notice people who are too BIG for their caps please let me know.

They look really good to me.

Will the players age?

When will we be able to upload a face?

The faces are rather homogenized and somewhat disturbing. I'll probably disable them until we can upload our own images which would sweet for theme leagues.

I had considered making the players age; I have the ability to do so. But that would require 3 to 5 times as many images, and since I have not done so with this batch I'd have to throw out the 2100 images I already have. Would it be cooler to habve more images overall or fewer images that actually age?

I was able to fly through face creation at one every 5 seconds or so, but I'd have to lock parameters and then take sequential shots while manipulating the age sliders.... hm. How many age levels? 3? 4? 5? I can't imagine going much farther than that. Keep aging after they retire or show them in their glory days?

As much of a pain as it would be to start over, is starting to sound really cool to me. I know other games may have pictures, but I don't know of any that actually age.

Fortunately, most of the processing work is done by scripts.

Dammit. Aging players is gonna buy me a ton of work, but it sounds too freaking cool.

As far as uploading images, I may be able to do that too... superimpose them on the 3D model and age them in the same way. Because of the work involved, of course, it would have to be for a small fee.

Aging Levels:
  • Youngsters: 16-20 = the young babies of baseball
  • Youthful: 21-25 = hey, we can drink, carouse, and play ball
  • Mature: 26-32 = got a family, time to get down to business
  • Older: 33-40 = the doctor is my best friend, looking forward to sitting by the pool
  • Retired: the picture when I was at my baseball best (glory days). Oh, yes... and keep the hat with the team logo before I was traded or waived.

Uploading images:
I rename players on my OCL team after players inducted in the National Hall of Fame. It would so cool to see a picture of Ossee Hood or Reggie Jackson on their player card.

Unfortunately, that's the kind of thing we can't have without a license from the MLBPA.

Oh well, just as I thought... but still it would be cool seeing my kids and pets on my team. But then it might become too much of a burden for you to handle a ton of uploads of potentially ridiculous faces.

That's what we will have to figure out. But right now I'm just working on getting the main system going, plus getting more functional updates done.

Maybe we can have custom faces for $5, like custom logos.

As much as I miss the attacking cat, I can understand the importance of changing your avatar. And you seem really excited about this. I don't blame you. Will there be looks of anguish for when the player is injured?

Here's some examples of the variety of players:

I am excited abut this... but I changed the avatar just to see if it would work as an avatar. The images are combined on the fly (cap and face) so they don't show up with a proper extension. They work as avatars; to put them into a forum post they need a &.jpg at the end.

Makes sense to me. Can you put the logo a bit higher on the hat? They seem a bit too close to the bill.

The bill is angled upward, so it actually blocks a tiny part of the logo, as it should from a 3D perspective.

Very, very cool. I'm looking forward to this one coming over to the main site. And maybe someday, the images could get implemented into DynastyVision, too?

OK, here's what an age progression would look like:

Late teens:

Mid 20's

Early 30's

40-ish

It's fairly subtle and I don't think it adds a ton, frankly.

Wondering about something else: Do all these players play for the Yankees, or are they allowed facial hair?
celamantia

January 23, 2009 at 12:54AM View BBCode

I have to add facial hair manually so not that many have it.
CaseyStengel

Like the progression. Now what about the non conformists, hippies, hipsters, ex-gang bangers. How about the all of a sudden super stud on juice aka McGuire or Bonds?
celamantia

January 23, 2009 at 02:05AM View BBCode

Well, let's just say that the more things I add, the fewer images we'll have. In the last hour I've generated enough images for progressions for 120 players, as opposed to the 2200 that are there now. So I'm 18 hours from just completing the set, and that's without adding facial hair to anyone.

There are about 610-650 active players in a league at any one time, not counting waiver bait.

Funny you should post that.. I was thinking of doing a display like that in Sim Dynasty.
