Subscription League Recovery

September 11, 2008 at 06:07AM View BBCode

Over the last several weeks we have been making changes to the backend to make it easier for subscription leagues to use the Private Available area for replacement teams, as well as make it easier for us to see who has paid. Unfortunately one of these changes collided with the Single Season deletion script.

We are in the process of importing last night's backup which was from about 3AM. This means that any activity for your leagues on Wednesday was lost.

The first step will be to restore this database to a backup area and is underway. We have not done this in a long time, maybe 5 years. So I am not sure how long this step will take. It could take 3 hours, it could take 20 hours.

Once this data is restored, I can then go ahead and transfer the relevant data to the live site database. This will likely take a couple hours as well.

Since the OCL played the World Series on Wednesday, we will be manually setting up the World Series winners and won't be resimming the WS. All the other leagues will have all games from Wednesday simmed again.

My expectation is that we won't play games in these leagues on Thursday. We may be able to run the OCL offseason events after everything is complete (OffSeason/relegation/Amateur Draft)

I sincerely apologize for this mistake. We are going to make changes to ensure this doesn't happen again. I'm also going to look into whether we can take a database backup right before the deletion script starts in case there are any issues in the future.

Ok, I think I am within an hour or two of getting this finished. It is important to get the data recovery done while the site is slow, it won't be possible during the day.

After that is complete, my plan is to get some sleep for a few hours. I will then work on setting up the OCL playoff winners and offseason stuff and making sure all leagues look okay.

The plan is for all leagues (OCL, RonSL, MBL, and BVL) to resume games on Friday.

You are viewing the raw post code; this allows you to copy a message with BBCode formatting intact.
Ok, I have reset up the team links and moved over all the team data. Let me know if you see anything missing or out of the ordinary. I have kept the backup database and scripts handy in case something is amiss.

As mentioned, I will turn back games for these leagues for Friday and will also setup the OCL playoff winners, offseason, etc. later on today.

One of the differences between this game and others is the communication we get when something happens...

I should tell you the story sometime of how TQSTATS screwed up our Baseball League two seasons ago so badly we had to move to another website ... and they never told us what happened, nor EVER apologized for the problem they CAUSED for us ... they pretty much didn't give a damn about the whole thing ....

Mistakes and unanticipated situations occur ... Thanks for doing everything you've done already and keeping us informed all-the-while ...

I echo Nick's wishes for "sweet dreams" ... you've earned 'em ... along with Jet and anyone else involved ...

What leagues are included under "Subscription Leagues"?

It's not a term I'm used to seeing, and as far as I can tell my 2 private league teams are fine this morning.

Thanks AllenMac for the kind words.

We have five leagues that pay month-to-month instead of 8 months at a time. We use PayPal subscriptions to pay for those leagues. Now that we have this automated a bit better, we may look to expand this to other new leagues.

I have fixed the issue for the leagues not seeing boxscores for games played this season.

It looks like the MBL and BVL had draft classes created about an hour before they were deleted. Unfortunately, there is no way to get these back so you will have new classes created tonight.

If you see any other problems, please let me know.

Thanks for the efforts Tyson. Believe it or not, sometimes it can be a positive when things like this happen because you get a chance to see whether customer service is really important to whoever you are paying your money to. Clearly, you are dedicated to satisfying your customers and not just providing the minimum amount of effort required. With that kind of emphasis on customer service pretty much any business can be made to succeed. It's a shame so few actually figure that out - consider yourself among the special few!

In a related point - I am a Ron Santo League manager and you have always hit my Paypal account for my subscription payment like clockwork. I noticed that there has been no charge for August and that date has long passed. Is that somehow related?

Thanks for the kind words. I felt really bad that this happened. It was a dumb mistake by me, and so I did what I could to make it right as quickly as possible.

It looks like your subscription was canceled on your end. Please go to Owner->Renewal you can reactivate this subscription.

Thanks,
Tyson

I echo all the above sentiments. That is one of the great things about you guys and this site. You explain things to us, let us know what is going on, give us updates and do your absolute best to keep things running smoothly. I may sometimes speak out, but I really do mean it when I say that this is an awesome game and you do a tremendous job of dealing with problems when they occur. And you are very patient when dealing with difficult, impatient and tedious owners like me.

Thanks for getting the BVL up and running again, and thanks for all your hard work making and keeping this a great game and site!
