A's acquire Valle

KANSAS CITY -- In a move that signifies their playoff intentions, the Kansas City Athletics acquired star pitcher Larry Valle from the New York Yankees, for outfielder Lamar Curd, and pitchers Jim Busby and Bobby Liniak. Said a front-office executive, "I think this trade will help both teams. New York was looking to make a shake-up after two Series losses, and decided their offense needs fixing. While we didn't really have any outfielders to spare, the chance to acquire a pitcher of Valle's quality only comes up once a decade, so we had to take the chance. Curd was merely a placeholder in center until either Johnny Gee comes back from injury or we deem Sammy Best ready for a callup."

That shakes things up a lot. I'd drop the Yanks a couple of spots in my predictions and move KC up a bunch. We may see a new representative in the WS from the AL.

Interesting trade. The Yankees get a decent hitter and a young talented pitcher plus a marginal prospect for one of the best pitchers in the league. It will be interesting to see how this trade works out as the season progresses.

I think Liniak is a little more than marginal. I've been developing him since I acquired him, and he hit B rating (or B-minus I guess) at the end of 1950, so he's probably a decent way into his next set of grades. No telling for sure, of course, but I think he'll have probably as good of a career as most of the top pitchers from the past two drafts, excepting Kosco, Maisel, and Pearson.

I suppose it is a gamble but this team in my belief as it was would not win a WS. I received a good Young Pitcher and a definite upgrade in my hitting. The other SP in the deal may or may not turn out but the other two players, once again in my belief, will be
valuable additions to my team. Trading Valle will not hurt this team as much as some managers may think, but time will tell. Anyway nothing like a good controversy and who ever represents the AL in the World series will need good hitting along with decent pitching to defeat the Cardinals who I feel have at least one good year left before the decline hits.

It will be interesting to see what happens now. Very surprising move. Best of luck to the both of you.

I love trades like this.

I think it looks good for both KC and NY, a win-win, as it were, which are the best trades, imo.

I thought Washington could finish 4th, but it looks like we may be in the second division again this year, KC just got tougher and NY is still tough.
