New Feature - Hidden Draftee Skills

June 10, 2014 at 06:46PM View BBCode

We are adding a wrinkle to the amateur draft classes. This will only be used in Speed leagues that elect to turn this feature on. I have turned this on for all the beta leagues.

Basically, Amateur Draftees will have their pluses/minuses hidden from their skills before they are drafted. Once they are drafted, their full skills will be revealed.

Leagues that are using Number displays can either elect to show skills as Letters with Plus/Minus or Letters without Plus/Minus.

The logic behind the feature is that you shouldn't know as much about players until you get them into your organization. I also think it will slightly increase the value of lower picks, and slightly decrease the value of higher picks.

If this feature proves popular, we may look to expand it and add other systems for hidden draftee skills.

I still need to spell out what the voting rules will be for leagues wishing to implement this.

Let me know if you find any issues or have any feedback.

Thanks,
Tyson

Any reason why the Beta League only has 90 players in the draft? Does this change have anything to do with having 10 draftees missing?

I love the motivation behind the idea, but I'm not sure the execution is really effective. It's more obfuscation than hiding the skill levels. I have specific thoughts on why I don't love it, but I have to work those into more concrete examples.

I expect like hidden development or the no +/- league settings it won't be a very common league setting.

I'll just note the 1966 draft in 2TL and 2043 draft in ASL will be the first using this. It will be interesting to look back in a couple decades and see how the draft classes worked out, I expect we'll see more 2nd, 3rd, and later round picks turn into stars and first round picks end up duds.

I don't think they are related, but I will take a look.

We had this issue with less than 100 players in the draft classes a couple weeks back. I think it has been fixed going forward, so I think this class was created before that fix was in place. Basically, some bad data in the database related to foreign players was causing an issue (for example, some of the Japanese players had B for bats instead of S, things like that - just a bit of junk data from my source of this data).

If you see this for any draft classes going forward, please let me know right away. I'm going to double check the data on Beta to make sure I didn't miss any.

I kind of like this idea but while we're at it lets get rid of fixed positions for non pitching draftees as well to make things better all around, do the OF, middle, corner, C designations and let the team that drafts them decide in their draft year.

I second the proposal... I generally have to train position players while in the minors to place them where they belong... example: a SS with D arm belongs at 1st base, not SS. It would be nice to draft the player and assign him to 1B instead of training him for the position.

I finished this feature last week. The beta league is set to hide the +/- currently.

Beta hasn't had plus/minus for a long time. A month or so ago, the actual values came back on for a couple of drafts, if you looked at the players individual "card". But, on the draft ranking page, we've had nothing but base letter grade for nine months.

Terrible feature, btw. Randomness and unpredictability is one thing, but the draft has become a total crapshoot. When you draft a C/C pitcher, you don't know if he's a 51-51 and going to be a really good prospect, or a 28-28, who's going to be a worthless piece of crap.

I'm not arguing for actual values, but a random factor of eight points seems like plenty, given that we've already randomized player development.

There were a few pieces I needed to finish. Hiding the +/- on player cards was one of them.

It was fairly easy to implement. We'll see how many leagues want to use it. I think a few will.
